Most people don’t know they exist – but they stand ready to save our lives in an emergency
in a variety of situations. What we are talking about are burst pressure discs that are used to trigger such apparatus as airline drop-down respiratory masks, automotive air bags, and fire extinguishing systems, just to name a few. (Brainin pioneered the development of the first automotive burst pressure disc in the eighties and since then has participated in advancement of technology to cover myriad car models and airbag configurations as well as applications outside the automotive industry).
What are the two worst things that could happen to a burst pressure disc? The very worst is failure to burst at the designed rupture pressure. This means that the safety equipment may not deploy when it’s most needed.
The second worst is for a disc to burst before the designated pressure has been reached. The consequences of premature disc bursts may include compromised safety, disruption and confusion, and potential recalls.
Since neither of these consequences is acceptable, Brainin has developed a variety of stringent protocols for developing, manufacturing and conducting rigorous 100% testing on all sorts of certified burst pressure discs. In fact, Brainin products are not related to the recent, highly-publicized automotive airbag recalls.
In the automotive industry alone there are dozens of different pressure burst disc styles. Some are activated by pressure, others by a combination of pressure and explosives. For some applications pressure discs are scored with a cross; others have a sealed flap; and some have no distinguishing features at all — just a deceptively simple-looking metal disc you can hold in the palm of your hand.
In every case Brainin collaborates with the safety device manufacturer to ensure that the
pressure disc ultimately developed for the application performs as intended. On top of that, rigorous procedures, developed at Brainin’s Research and Development Test Center, are used to certify that each disc will burst within a specified pressure range (e.g. 10 psi ±3-5%).
